Ju Dong-Beom
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of academic stress and self-esteem on adolescent suicidal ideation. Subjects included 258 middle school students selected from an urban school setting. Academic stress, self-esteem, and suicidal ideation scales were utilized. T-test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were employed for data analysis. Findings are as follows: First, a significant correlation exists between suicidal ideation and both academic success and self-esteem. Second, academic stress exerted the most significant influence on the suicidal ideation of participants. These findings suggest that with regards to the prevention of adolescent suicide, intensive efforts to relieve academic stress and promote self-esteem should be implemented by schools. Results and implications are further discussed.
